"Teach me Your way, O Lord;
I will walk in Your truth;
Unite my heart to fear Your name"
-Psalm 86:11
The NIV reads, "give me an undivided heart."
I love it. We often hear of moving our hearts to single beat - that many people will join to lift up a single cause. This isn't about unity among believers, though. David cries out to God for a united heart within himself. Perhaps this is what Jesus was after when he proclaimed, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God." Oh how often my heart is divided!
Jeremiah goes on to say, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" Ain't it the truth? I'm beginning to think all of this "Just follow your heart" advice we've received all these years isn't the answer.
What can we trust if not our hearts to direct our paths? And how can we unite these wayward hearts? By spending time in constant communication with God by sinking our teeth into His Word everyday. It's true. It's good. It's alive! And our heart will perpetually remain divided until it is wholly God's. So many things on this earth constantly lobby for our attention, our affection. Only One is worthy.
O Lord, unite our hearts that we may praise Your name with one purpose, one motivation, one voice.
Have a blessed Tuesday!
